June 2009 - Monthly Scrapbooking

I sure can tell it has been a busy month and not much time to create layouts! I only created a total of 5 layouts this month. Hopefully, I will be more productive in July!

Coordinates Collections - June 2009 1 Page Sketch: My Graduation

I created this layout for the Coordinates Collections June 2009 Single-Page Sketch. I created a layout using my graduation photos from 2008. I graduated from the University of North Texas on May 10, 2008 with a Bachelors of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies with honors! I was very proud of my honors since I finished my degree with husband and kids! I primarily used green, white, and black cardstock to create the layout along with some graduation stickers and cardstock I purchased last year.

California Vacation - Sure was fun!

We had a busy and fun week this past week. Our California vacation officially started on Tuesday and we woke up early to get on the 6:15AM flight to Houston where we connected to Los Angeles. We landed in Los Angeles at 9:05AM and then headed to get our rental car and head to Anaheim, CA. By the time we arrived we were hungry and Jakob was exhausted! He ended up sleeping a little at Denny's!

Once Jakob woke up, we headed back to our rental car and changed shoes and got our tickets for Disney. We walked around Disney and I believe Tuesday was the hottest day of our trip. However, the high was only probably about 80 degrees! It was really busy at Disneyland our first afternoon. The lines had over hour waits, but later the same evening they were better. We watched the parade in the afternoon and Jakob loved the parade. Later the same evening, we watched the electrical light parade show. Jakob was not as sure about that parade. I am sure being tired, dark, and all those lights were different for him! We also saw the fireworks to end Tuesday.

Wednesday morning, we woke up and had a decent continental breakfast. Then we were off to Disneyland again. We started the morning with getting our picture taken and then riding the train. We stopped in Toontown where we were able to get ahold of Pluto and Mickey Mouse after waiting in line. I had bought Jakob a signature book where the characters sign and there is also room for the pictures too. We were only able to get those 2 due to bad timing of lines closings, etc. We were all wearing out by Wednesday afternoon and decided we would start heading toward San Diego. Jakob was in a dire need to take a nap.

Randy and Nikki met us at our hotel Wednesday evening. We decided to have dinner at the hotel and sure was a good thing because Jakob was starving and exhausted! Once got food in him, he was a little better.

Thursday morning, we went to the San Diego Zoo. We were there from about 9:00AM-4:00PM. I think we saw most of the zoo, but I know we did not see all of it! We were amazed how large it really was! My pedometer said we walked over 5 miles. The elephant exhibit was truly my favorite. After we finished at the zoo, we stopped for fast food for the boys so they would not be starving by the time we got dinner with Randy and Nikki. We met them at their new house and then had dinner at the Cheesecake Factory. Sure was really good food!

Friday morning, we met Randy at the navy base. After a ceremony, the boys got to look at helicopters. Jakob continued to call them Transformers. The only thing I could think of was Jakob has not really seen helicopters except for in a section in the beginning of Transformers! We had lunch at a golf course and then headed back to the hotel for a break.

Friday evening, we met Nikki's family at a Mexican restaurant. The food sure was good and had a good time visiting with everyone. I took some nice pictures with everyone together after dinner and some great pictures of Randy and the kids!

We had an early flight out of San Diego Saturday morning. Our flight took off at 7:00AM and landed in New Mexico at 9:30AM. I tried to see if there was enough room on the 9:45AM flight, but was completely full! We were initially booked on the 11:30AM flight, but turned out to have many nonrev people wanting to fly too just like us. We ended up getting on the next flight at 1:40PM out of New Mexico. It was the first nonrev flight I had missed based on planning. Not having to pay for the flight sure helps the cost of the vacation, so not a problem!

Overall, we walked over 18 miles last week! You should be getting email links to view all the pictures from the trip. I have sent Disneyland and the San Diego Zoo. The direct links allow you to download them at higher resolutions. However, be advised if you want to download you will need to set it to download and walk away! It will take a little while to download since it is a large file.

Emergency Rooms are NOT Fun!

Jakob started Vacation Bible School at the United Methodist church near us this past week. He went each day except Wednesday, to let him rest after the long night in the ER. He had fun while there. They did many activities and created many crafts. He also brought home things that were made by others and has continued playing with the random things. His two favorite things are a riced filled water bottle with objects inside and a stuffed green turtle. They also took a picture of everyone in his class on Tuesday and created a cute frame too!

On Tuesday, I cleaned our balcony while Jakob was at VBS. Since Jakob enjoys playing in the sand, I had sand over most of the balcony. I had forgotten about the sand in the container and the lid was off of it. When I walked outside to begin the process, I noticed these bugs coming out and flying in the sand! I jumped and shrieked initially...then I was carefully trying to determine what they were. I first thought they were those flying ants, but later ruled it out. I never figured out what exact bug was making a home in Jakob's sand, but they all were killed with bug spray and/or flew away! Okay, so the toys that were sitting on the sand container were thrown away. Partially because I was grossed out from the bugs, but more importantly I had sprayed bug spray on them. I carefully picked up the other random sand toys and they came into the house and were soaped down and bleached! As I continued to ensure the bugs were dead, I swept up all the sand and cleaned the container. Later, the container came into the house and it too was drenched in the bathtub and bleached! My balcony is quite clean right now, except for the colored marks from sidewalk chalk on the concrete!!

As many of you already know, Jakob fell down Tuesday evening on the stairs. We were returning from swimming and were on the way to the apartment. He had been worrying about two toes on his right foot. Somehow he had blisters on them, which I am not sure how he got those since we spent most the time in the big pool. Anyhow, we didn't get up 1 step before it happened. When he fell, I felt so bad because he was crying and I said to get up. I had not realized his hands had not caught him and he actually landed rough! At that point I realized what happened and quickly carried him upstairs where Jeff and I got him changed and stopped the bleeding. The poor thing hit right below his right eyebrow. We got him out of swim trunks and into pajamas so we would not have to change him later not knowing what time we might get home from the emergency room. I quickly changed from my swimsuit and we were off to the Medical Center of Lewisville. After everything was said and done, he had 4 stitches. We were on the way home after 11:00PM after him falling shortly after 7:00PM. He has done well this week after falling and hasn't had a major reaction to it. He did tell Roland tonight a little about the fall and reenacted some of his crying (when he fake cries, it is too funny!) and how he told the doctors he needed a bandaid! During the whole event, Jakob kept saying he wanted to eat and he wanted a cheeseburger. Since it was way to late to eat, I took him to Whataburger on Wednesday. Since Tuesday night, we have been keeping the Neosporin and his Transformer bandaids on it. He has really enjoyed wearing the Transformer bandaids! It has been healing well and I have been brave and took a few pictures of it each day so we could see the difference each day. Looking back, it is amazing how much it has already healed. I did pretty good throughout the whole event. At the hospital, the doctors and nurse said how impressed they were of me. They said normally moms have a hard time. I was down near his feet rubbing his legs and continued to talk to him to keep him calm during the event. However, when we were completely done, I became queasy and had to sit for a moment. I suppose the adrenaline wore off, but was better after a little water and sitting down for a moment. I must say I was more relieved after talking to Mom and Mema when they both asked me if he also had a black eye. His eye has shifted colors in the previous days, but them asking me made me know it was common! As of this evening, he is down to 2 stitches left. He lost 1 early on, but it was the bottom stitch and from looking at the area, it looked sealed. This evening after dinner, I went to change his bandaid and to put more Neosporin on it and realized the center stitch remaining was missing. Again, the overall area appears sealed and the hospital had said the stitches were to come out in 5 days (Sunday), but they are officially coming out on Monday. We will continue to put Neosporin on it to help from major scarring.

We decided to rearrange our apartment on Wednesday night! My computer was in the bedroom along with my scrapbook table (aka: card table). We had a loveseat couch in the living room that we thought might fit in our bedroom if we moved things around. I grabbed the measuring tape and found it would fit. It would be wonderful if the master bedroom was a little bigger, but it works. The living room looks especially larger with moving the love seat out of it. The bedroom has a cozy feel to me now and have actually went in the bedroom to read sitting on the couch. We tend to rearrange at random times. It sure is a great way to vacuum and freshen things up! I need to take a picture of the living room, but I was still finishing it up yesterday. Today, I took some time to scrapbook and created a few layouts.
On Friday, we all attended Roland's summer band camp concert. He attended all week from 8:00AM-12:00PM. I think he enjoyed it, based on what he said. Jakob enjoyed listening to the concert. When we first walked in, Roland's band was warming up on stage. Jakob covered his ears as normal and said it was too loud! He has done that at the other two concerts during the school year. However, after we got in there and sitting down he stopped covering his ears. He was quite excited listening to the songs Roland played. The other band played a few more songs including the theme from Transformers. Can you guess Jakob loved that song too?

The Scrappiest Sketch #17: Swim Practice

I created this layout for the Coordinates Collections Summer Camp Challenge #4. The challenge was to create a layout using stars and stripes in the layout for 2 points. I used the June 2009 Desert Serenade kit. The layout is designed using Sketch #17 from The Scrappiest!

These pictures are from Roland's swim lessons from last year.
He was signed up for Level 3: Stroke Development. He did well last year and he agreed it was lots of work on some of the days. He begins Level 4 this upcoming summer.

The Scrappiest Sketch #15: Swim Lessons

I created this layout for the Coordinates Collections Summer Camp Challenge #3. The challenge was to create a layout based on water for 2 points. I used the June 2009 Desert Serenade kit. The layout is designed using Sketch #15 from The Scrappiest!

These pictures are from Jakob's swim lessons from last year.
He was signed up for Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills. He did not do so well last year! Jakob wanted to play rather than learn the skills! However, he is scheduled again this year for the same lessons and has already started showing signs of improvement.

Lions, Tigers, Bears..Oh My

Roland had his first orthodontics appointment on Monday. The planned treatment is about 20 months. They created his records by taking more x-rays and creating his mold of his teeth. They also put spacers, or separators, between the back teeth to create space so that orthodontic bands can be placed at his next appointment. He has instructions regarding the spacers. However, he CANNOT have any sticky foods, such as: gum, caramels, taffy, now and later candy, tootsie rolls, starburst, licorice, or skittles. There is a list of foods he also cannot have once he gets his braces. Looking at our schedules, Roland has band camp next week (6/15-6/19) and a vacation with us the week after (6/22-6/27). They did not want him to be sore for band camp or the vacation. I was able to schedule his top braces on Monday, June 29th at 8AM. They do top first and then bottom to give them time for the adjustment in their mouth.

We went swimming with Jakob's friend on Tuesday. They came over to our apartment at 10AM and we went to the pool for a good 2 hrs! By noon, they were getting hungry and cranky. They were much better after eating hot dogs. The boys played after eating with toys and then it was time for naps.

Roland had a dentist appointment on Wednesday. He had one of his bottom incisor teeth either chipped or had a soft spot when it initially came in and was more and likely missing part of his tooth. He started going to Jakob's dentist in Coppell since he is covered under our insurance. I told him after his mouth was no longer numb, we would go and get ice cream. I looked up coupons for Sonic and they had a few Buy 1 Get 1 Free ice cream deals. After Jakob woke up around 3PM, I decided it wasn't TOO hot and we would walk. This way I knew I would burn some calories to be able to eat the ice cream! I ended up ordering 2 chocolate sundaes and 1 ice cream in a dish. The coupon made one of the ice cream sundaes free and figured Jakob would eat one. Sonic also has a special between 2PM-4PM where all drinks and slushies were half price. The boys originally wanted slushies, but the machine was not working. I ordered cherry limeades instead (Jakob wanted a red drink) and me a diet cherry limeade. Overall, I only spent $5.51 for everything and figured that was okay. Before we left for Sonic, I had looked up the point values of the different ice creams. The ice cream in a dish was only 6 points and knew that would not ruin my day of eating good (especially since we were walking too). The ice cream comes out and guess which one Jakob wanted...the one with NO chocolate or the cherry! I let Roland have the cherry because he asked but I thought it was just too funny based on how I had it all planned out!

Thursday sure was busy. We went and listened to the story time at Barnes and Noble. It was okay. The lady reading held the book so she could read it and then held it out for the kids to see the pictures. It really is not hard to hold the book where the kids can see the pictures and read it at the same time! Jakob's friend, Mason, and his mom were with us and we both agreed! The other thing was she was reading 2 princess books! There were 4 girls and 2 boys there listening. What Kristi and I did not understand was why didn't she read one about a princess and one about a knight and a dragon. Oh well! After we finished at Barnes and Noble, it was time to take Roland back to his mom's house.

The Lewisville Library had Kelly the clown from the Ringling Bros. Circus on Thursday afternoon. He was quite funny and entertaining. Jakob and Mason both laughed! The circus teams up with the library each year to give free tickets for children to the circus for reading 5 books. Jakob has read his 5 books, now I just need to take it to the box office and exchange it for the actual ticket. While we were there we learned how to get free tickets for adults too! We became FANS on their Facebook page and once they get to 1000, we will get 1 free ticket per household. I love free events! Sometime in July or August, we will go watch the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.Mom visited for Friday and Saturday. We had to run errand and we went to the post office, CVS, McDonalds, my doctor's appointment, haircut for Jakob, Wal-Mart, and last but not least Starbucks! We did all of this before 4:00PM! We really needed the recharge at Starbucks! We had dinner at Olive Garden and then did a walk around the complex while Jakob rode on his bicycle. On Saturday morning, we woke up and went to Staples and Kohl's. I wanted to use a coupon for Staples for a current special on paper. Mom laughs because she has tons of paper, but I told her I tend to use my rebates from recycling my print cartridges for paper. The special this week was a ream of copy paper for $1 after store coupons and Stapes easy rebates. It was too good of a deal! We headed for Chick-Fil-A to purchase lunch and take home to eat before going to our first musical of the year. We saw the Wizard of Oz and it was good. The inside jokes here and there were funny. For instance, the cowardly lion talks about how he didn't have any courage. He continues to go on about how his father took him up on a high rock looking over the village and told him how one day it would all be his! Then comments how he was afraid of heights. Nice Lion King reference within the musical to make you laugh! The musical was very similar to the actual movie, in reference to the dialogue and singing. However the special effects and the overall performance makes these musicals fun and exciting!

Today, I would like to do some cleaning around the apartment. We are halfway through June and I have not done any scrapbooking!! NONE, ZILCH, ZERO!! Part of the problem is my mess in my room! I have stuff all of the place right now on my card table (scrap table) making it really tough to do any artsy craft stuff. So hopefully, I will get in gear and clean today!

I hope everyone has a great week! I am proud of my walking last week. I had 14.7 miles!

Staples: June 13th

Saturday morning, my mom and I needed to go to Kohl's to look for shoes. Next door to Kohl's is Staples. This week, Staples ran an ad for Hammerhill paper for $1.00 after store coupons and rebates. I picked up 2 packs which was the limit and another pack of 4 x 6 photo pages for my coupon binder. I had a $6.00 rebate coupon expiring 6/30, so this special worked perfectly!

(2) Hammerhill Copy Plus Paper $4.99 after store savings; $1.00 after EasyRebate
(1) Staples 4x6 Photo Pages $3.49

I used my $6.00 rebate check from recycling ink cartridges. I like when rebate checks or rewards from companies are pre-tax! It saves more money!

Total After Store Savings: $14.55
Total Spent: $8.07
Total Saved: $
6.48 or 45%
Rebate Submitted: $7.98 (Figuring in the rebate, I spent $0.09 cents for everything at Staples.)

CVS: June 12th

I needed to use some of my ECB's so I went ahead and purchased conditioner since we were almost out along with Dawn dish liquid soap for my mom while she was in town visiting. She had told me we could go get everything at Wal-Mart/Target rather than stopping all over the place. CVS was on our way from the Post Office to our next stop!! She was amazed when I finished the transaction and only spent $1.35 out of pocket!!

Wal-Mart: June 12th

I went to Wal-Mart with my mom on Friday. She always ends up purchasing things for my boys and she is working on learning the coupon game. Her newspaper does not get all the good coupons as I get with the Dallas/Fort Worth paper. She ended up saving about $5.00-$7.00 with the coupons I gave her. They did a trip about two weeks ago to her local Walgreens and she was shocked in how much they saved on that trip. She is hoping to retire soon and says she will have more time to keep up with all of the coupons! Maybe I can even get her to create a blog!

I only had a few random items we needed while she picked up her things.

Pokemon: Meet Ash (Level 2 Book) by Michael Teitelbaum $3.00

2 - Kraft Mac & Cheese $0.50

Downy Liquid Softner $4.26
-$1 off any Pringles $120 Savings Rebate Booklet

2% Great Value Milk 1 Gallon $1.98

Overall, I spent $9.74 and saved $1.00 with my coupon.

Mailbox Monday

It has been busy around here lately and I am so behind. Here is a picture of my free items for the past two weeks! I ran out of time to post about them! Overall, I was most excited about receiving the reusable free shopping bag.

Keeping busy!

This week I set my pedometer goals for 5000 steps daily and 2000 steps of aerobic walking. My new pedometer I bought from Amazon connects to the computer and keeps track of all of the information. I averaged about 4000 steps daily and 1600 aerobic steps. I only wear the pedometer when we go out and not around the house. Overall, for the week I walked 8 miles. Since starting all of the walking, Jeff and I have both lost about 5 lbs!

This past week was the last week of school and I figured there would not be many teachers out of school needing substitutes. Instead, I enjoyed my last week with Jakob at school since Friday was his last day until August. I had random things to do the entire week including errands and a dentist appointment, so all in all, it's good.

We spent some time at the pool this week! I took Jakob to the pool on Monday and Wednesday. Since Friday was the last day of school, I picked up Roland at 1:00PM and then we had lunch and picked up Jakob. After we got home, we changed into swimming attire and headed to the pool. We spent a good 2 - 2 1/2 hours at the pool on Friday! They have so much fun and hate when I tell them it is time to go.I had a dentist appointment on Wednesday. The appointment was originally next week but I was able to reschedule it since I was trying to take a week off of daycare expenses. Since my dentist appointment, I am learning to floss! I ended up having four fillings in-between my teeth. Where if I had been flossing, it would have helped. I was able to get in quickly and returned on Thursday for my fillings. The fillings are not bad, but the being numb forever sure is a pain! Around 2:30PM, I was still numb and decided to just take a nap since I couldn't eat and I wasn't in the mood to do anything! I remember waking up around 3:30PM and realizing my mouth was almost normal again and deciding to continue my nap though! Finally got up around 4:00, made a peanut butter and jelly and went to get Jakob from school!

Wednesday night was the free rootbeer float from Sonic after 8PM. Jakob rode his bike and Jeff and I walked with him all the way to Sonic. It is about a 3 miles roundtrip. They sure were busy, but were handling the crowd well. Jakob was not sure of the ice cream and said, "I don't like this ice cream." We told him we were going to get ice cream. He does not drink soda so the rootbeer float was something new! They did not put a lot of ice cream with the rootbeer so it was primarily rootbeer, but was still good.
On Saturday, we went to the Lewisville Library for their Summer Reading Kickoff event. It was really busy which is good, but I was surprised with the number of people. I got the boys signed up for their summer reading challenges and Roland found a few books. Jakob picked up some Transformers books, but they are getting returned tomorrow. We needed those books for the short term process of waiting in line for the freebies, but are way over his head for understanding! Saturday evening we headed over to a friends house for a dinner party. Jakob got to play with 3 of his other friends, while we all visited, had spaghetti with great desert, and laughed and laughed! There is about 6 of us that have met from Children's Courtyard that we all get along really well and have been getting together to let the kids play while we all visit and have a good time too!

We went rock climbing today at Summit Climbing Gym in Grapevine, TX. We met up with Daniel, Jeff's brother, and the five of us climbed! I sent an email with a link for pictures because there are many great pictures! Jakob took over the photography and did well on most pictures...however, I did delete a lot of pictures before uploading them to send out! He was having a blast taking the pictures of everyone climbing. Jakob did okay climbing, but think he was a little apprehensive about the harness around him. He did go about twice his height on the wall and you'll see that in the pictures. Roland enjoyed every minute of climbing! Jeff and I were glad that Daniel mentioned it because we sure enjoyed doing it. It was something different and we figured if Jakob does it again, he would probably do better at it. I had found a coupon on www.entertainment.com that saved us 20% off our cost today, so pretty much paid for Jakob between the 5 of us that climbed today! I posted all of the pictures to my gallery.

Kroger: June 5th

I went to Kroger and after finishing, I came home and unloaded most of the freezer items directly into our outside freezer in the garage. The freezer is currently in a detached garage at our apartment complex and is really full right now! I also had to run to Super Target and Teacher's Tools shortly after so I was unable to snap a picture. Next time I need to take a picture of the full grocery cart! However, most of the items I purchased had coupons.

3 more weeks until California!

Only 3 more weeks until our vacation to California! I have entered the airports, hotels, and attractions into the GPS! I am sure I will add a few more between now and the trip!

Here's last week's update:
Last week went fast and we did a random amount of things. Overall, I walked 11.4 miles last week!

Last Sunday, we went to the pool for about an hour. It was pretty busy since it was the Memorial holiday weekend. The boys enjoyed it and played! They did not want to leave when it was time to go. Roland primarily played in the regular pool while Jakob and Jeff hung out in the kid splash zone pool. I took pictures this day!

On Memorial Day, I got together with a bunch of Jakob's friends and moms and we all went to Boomerang's. It is a place with about 6-7 bounce houses and the kids played non stop for about 5 hours!! They ran and ran...the people would blow the whistles and tell them to walk. I think they got tired of telling them and stopped after a while because there were hardly any kids there!

Tuesday, I was all ready and dressed to sub for a teacher when I woke Jakob up to find he was running a low-grade fever and half sick. I turned on the closet light and he said he didn't want to get up. Okay...that is not Jakob! He's the one waking me up bright and early everyday!! I knew something was wrong. He told me he didn't want to get up and he was sick. I told him if he was sick he would have to stay home and take medicine and stay in bed. He said okay. I reminded him the 'blue' medicine (he hates it!) and he was like okay. I was sorta shocked that he said he would take the blue medicine and stay in bed. I knew he didn't feel well. I sent an email and canceled my sub job. He ended up in bed all day watching tv or movies. He didn't attempt to do much else. (However...I think he shared his cold a little, as it hit me Friday evening/Saturday.)

The Ford Explorer was coming due for it's annual inspection. I decided to take the day to go get it inspected. It is now 10 years old and I sure could tell when the maintenance employee called me outside with the paperwork. He told me it failed! I was slightly shocked because Jeff and his dad just did so much work to it about a month ago! Turns out the brake master cylinder was leaking and needed to get fixed. Great! I had just figured out that Jakob could stop going to school on June 5th to cut back a week of daycare ($175) and instead was rewarded with fixing the Ford! lol So on Thursday, we took the Ford back into the shop and they fixed it and re-inspected the Ford. It passed, so we are good for another year! Hopefully, as much work that has been done lately between Jeff and his dad, Gregg, it should go for quite some time again. I really do not want another car payment right now!!

We have started walking around the apartment complex in the evenings after dinner. It tends to be after 7pm once it is not so hot. Wednesday, we did a short walk around the complex. Jakob walked and ran the entire way. Our initial plan was to have Jakob ride his bicycle, but I forgot about the garage opener which was in the Ford. We had dropped it off at the Kwik Kar that evening so we didn't have to deal with it in the morning. We did get the car back on Thursday. I took it to get washed and vacuumed before picking Jakob up from school. Sure smells good!

I subbed on Friday for a math teacher. This week is the last week of school. I went ahead and decided I could use the week vacation before the next 10 weeks of keeping kids busy and going nonstop!

We took a good walk on Friday evening. Jeff and I walked while Jakob rode his bicycle. We decided it was nice out so we went ahead and had him ride his bike while we walked to the playground. It works out to be at least 2.62 miles roundtrip, with a playground stop in the middle! Jakob loves every minute of it!

This past Saturday and Sunday, I slept a lot! As mentioned, I think whatever Jakob had on Tuesday was shared to me! Doing better now, but still coughing and slight running/stuffy nose. Initially, I thought it was allergies, but I have no clue. At this point, I am assuming it was some bug Jakob was generous to give me!
